Fire at Grenfell Tower in Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea

Sent on behalf of Cllr Homan, Cabinet Member for Housing, and Nilavra Mukerji, Director of Housing Services

Dear Housing Representatives Forum,

You’ll probably have seen the news about the horrendous fire at Grenfell Tower in Kensington. Thanks to everyone who has offered help. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this terrible situation.

I’m writing to make you aware of what we’re doing here in H&F.

We’ve offered support to Kensington & Chelsea Council and their residents and we’re helping them in every way we can.

Worried about someone?
Anyone with a concern about family or friends, please call the Police Casualty Bureau on 0800 096 1233.

Keeping you safe
I’d also like to reassure you that we have reviewed fire safety in all our tower blocks. Following the previous fire at Shepherds Court, we have specialist advisors working with us to make sure our fire safety is the best it can be.

For advice on what to do in a fire, please see overleaf.

Traffic update
Please check national news or the tfl.gov.uk website for the latest information. The Hammersmith & City and Circle lines and the A40 Westway have been badly affected.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact your local area housing office.

Thanks again for all the kind messages. We’ll continue to do everything we can to help our friends and colleagues in Kensington.

Your faithfully,

Cllr Lisa Homan
Cabinet Member for Housing

In the event of a fire

The Fire Brigade’s advice is:
·                 Immediately tell everyone
·                 Never use the lifts
·                 Keep low – where the air is cleaner
·                 Call 999
·                 Don’t go back in.

Plan ahead now

·                 Plan your best escape route, so you’re prepared.
·                 Talk through your escape plan with your family now, including children.
·                 Choose a safe room – one with a phone and a window, in case you can’t get out.
·                 Keep escape routes clear.
·                 Get your own smoke alarm – even if there is a fire warning system in your block.

Regards,

Nilavra Mukerji
